Using Natural Stone Landscape for Your Backyard

Lately we have been receiving calls from homeowners looking to use natural stone veneer for backyard projects. While we don’t offer our products directly to homeowners (we sell to our authorized dealers) I always take the time to have a conversation regarding how natural stone can be used at home.

How Homeowners Use Natural Stone in the Backyard

There are many ways natural stone is used by homeowners for their backyard landscape. Here are some that we see regularly:

Build a Wall: It’s not uncommon for homeowners to use natural stone to build a wall in their backyard. This can be done by stacking thin stone or full bed veneer, depending on the look you are trying to achieve. The natural thin stone provides an “earthy”, traditional look, while full bed veneer can offer a touch of modern. The walls are usually for decorative purposes standing only a few feet high.

Walkways & Gardens: Natural stone is often used for walkways and gardens. It may be a walkway to the garden or using the stone to surround your garden. Either way, it is useful and looks good. I don't recommend using thin stone for a walkway but Bluestone or full bed veneer make a nice substitute.

The Patio: If you have a patio in your backyard, it’s probably where you spend most of your time. Whether it’s having guests over, a family dinner, or simply lighting up the grill, natural thin stone can turn an ordinary patio into something special. It will not only look good, it will be built to last and can increase the value of your property when it comes time to sell or get your home appraised.

Fireplace or Fire Pit: Perhaps considered the “pinnacle” of backyard landscape is a beautiful fireplace or fire pit. Many homeowners invest in a backyard fireplace or fire pit because it’s great for hosting, extends the time you can spend outside comfortably, and if done right will increase the value of your property. The right natural stone can provide a rustic, traditional, or modern look and match any outside decor you’re going for.

Say goodbye to your boring backyard and consider natural stone to spruce things up. The right investment can make your time at home more enjoyable, improve the look, and increase the value of your property when it’s time to sell.
