Featured Teammate: Jill, Financial Controller

This week we celebrated a year since our Financial Controller, Jill, joined the Delgado Stone team! She oversees all daily accounting functions and human resource areas, and is assisted by two of our other teammates. Jill is also part of the leadership team which creates and plans financial strategies for the company. While this is her first time working (indirectly) with natural stone, her previous accounting roles were also connected to the trades and the home improvement industry. As she learns more about the business, she said she has a new appreciation for natural stone and everything involved in the process. "There's a lot more to it than I thought," Jill said. "It's interesting, and it's exciting to work with an industry leader!"

Jill said she was drawn to the company culture in her initial interview. The ease of communication with the leaders, the opportunity for everyone to grow, and the feeling of being valued and appreciated were a few of the things she is inspired by. "The company isn't just settled where it is, where you keep doing what you're doing," Jill said. "Everyone is excited to move forward and grow, make changes and evolve--and it makes a difference feeling like you're part of something." 

One of the greatest challenges in her role is also one of the most rewarding aspects of her work: restructuring the finance department, reworking processes, and creating a solid foundation for the company has been her main focus since joining the team. To continue her own professional growth and leadership journey, Jill said she looks forward to learning as much as she can about other aspects of the business, including production and getting to know the materials. "An important piece of finance is learning about the products and how everything runs," Jill said. "Learning the fundamentals of a company, and its products, is the best way to make decisions." 

Her eagerness to learn and collaborate have earned the respect of her teammates, and is one of the best parts of the last year. CEO Mike Wolfe said, "Jill made an immediate contribution to our team not only as the Financial Controller, but as a leader who lives our core values. It's exciting to see the success she is experiencing, as well as the positive impact she has on her teammates. I'm grateful for the opportunity to work alongside her and look forward to the journey ahead."

Outside of work, Jill loves to travel. A few favorite destinations are the Caribbean, Virginia (to visit family) and New York City. She was very excited about her upcoming first trip to Canada, to see a Formula One race. When spending time locally, Jill enjoys hiking and walking local trails, where you can often find her with her 13-year-old Miniature Long-haired Daschund, Jackson! At age six, Jackson had surgery and follow-up treatments including water therapy and laser therapy, but he never regained use of his back legs. He still manages to live his best life--and he loves hanging out in his carrier/backpack on their walks. 

We are grateful for Jill's dedication, patience, and attention to details. The way she has grown as a teammate and a leader, and encourages others to do the same, is an asset to our company journey, and we look forward to our next steps together.
