5 Simple Ways to Add Value to Your Home

When you want to add value to your home there are typically three upgrades people make: Kitchen, Bathroom, Finished Basement. These three classics have been the standard for years but now that everyone is doing it, homeowners need to find ways to stand out from the crowd.

Five Simple Home Improvements to Add Value

As you look to improve your home and consider the value for resale, consider these five simple improvements:

  • Let There Be Light: Almost everyone craves natural light. Light gives us energy and creativity to conquer the day. If your home has natural light, you are ahead of the game. If not, consider how you can add light to your home. Recessed lighting, dimmer switches, sconces, and other inexpensive items are available to help control the light. What is the light situation in your home and how can you improve it?
  • Go Tech!: We’re not talking about college sports, this is about upgrading your home with new technology. We are in a technological revolution and if we embrace it we can add value. A smart thermostat can save money. A doorbell camera can let you see who is at your door on your phone. Smart appliances can be controlled from your smartphone so you never have to wonder if you left the iron on again. Embrace technology, don’t fight it.
  • The Great Outdoors: In a recent article we discussed current outdoor trends using natural stone so we won’t go in depth here. Adding a new patio, walkway, fireplace, or garden can provide “curb appeal” and attract new home buyers. It’s also easy on the eyes or provides a great entertaining space while you occupy the home. Even if it’s seasonal, adding value outside can add value overall.
  • Be Different: Tile and brick are common as a backsplash or exposed wall. Have you considered natural stone? We see more people using thinstone veneer inside to make their home stand out from the rest. With so many color variations there is something for everyone. A silver or black ledgestone can provide a modern and trendy look while a natural fieldstone gives gives the rustic “New England” charm many people crave. Whatever your taste, consider natural thinstone veneer to be different.
  • Closet Space: The closet can be overlooked but believe it or not, it adds value. While this may not make or break your home value it is something people always consider when purchasing a home. Do they have space for their wardrobe and “stuff” or will it be a tight fit. A nice closet can give your home a little extra boost while on the market and make your home a little more comfortable to live in while you occupy it.

We’re not telling you to avoid the traditional home improvements in kitchens, basements and bathrooms but if you’re looking to save a little money and add value to your home try these inexpensive improvements and take your home to the next level.
