3 Ways to Feature Natural Stone in Your Landscape Design

Natural stone is an ideal building material for many aspects of outdoor living projects because of its durability and sustainability--and also for aesthetic reasons. Creating peaceful, relaxing spaces is second nature when using stone, combined with good craftsmanship and imagination. When we came across this article on rock garden ideas from Homes & Gardens, we were inspired to share a few ways to use natural stone to incorporate that tranquil vibe into landscape design projects. (We're also excited to have one of our fireplaces in the article's photo for #8!)

Sawn Natural Stone Steps

1. Steps

The article mentions how adding steps can enhance a rock garden and make it more harmonious. We also love how steps connect different areas of the property, and bring the overall design of each property together! In the photo above, Central NH Landscaping installed sawn natural stone steps from the Colonial Tan collection (supplied by Del R. Gilbert Block) to create a landscape that is as stunning as the view.

2. Privacy for Seating Areas

Adding privacy to a seating area is a great suggestion by Homes & Gardens when it comes to incorporating low-maintenance beauty into a recreational space. An outdoor fireplace is also a great way to enhance privacy and create a functional space for entertaining, gathering, and enjoying the outdoors throughout the seasons. The photo above accomplishes those goals using Connecticut Blend Ashlar supplied by Extech Building Supply

3. Elements of Water

Water features take leisure spaces to the next level, and are a great addition to rock gardens. Water features, such as the breathtaking pool and fountain in this design, also showcase the artistic use of Old New England Rounds. The design by Redmond Design Group combines the soft edges of the natural stones, a waterfall, and the pool itself (by Soake Pools) for a one-of-a-kind feature.

Natural stone adds charm to a variety of outdoor living projects, including rock gardens as well as landscape designs, fireplaces, pools and spas. When blending different natural stone features together (like the ones in the article and featured in the photos here) there are many ways to build imaginative and unique spaces to enjoy for years to come.
