7 Home Design Trends Featuring Natural Stone

Natural stone can add a visual appeal to your home no matter how or where you incorporate it, and it offers many functional and environmentally friendly benefits, as well. Since we are partial to it as a building material, we were excited to see natural stone referenced in a recent Houzz article discussing trends in home design and remodeling for 2023. This article outlines seven key trends to consider when selecting natural stone for your upcoming interior or exterior project.

Nutmeg Ridge Rougly Squares & RectanglesThe Nutmeg Ridge collection enhances this modern kitchen with rustic earth tones.

1-Modern Rustic Style

Natural stone and wood complement one another and add warmth with a more modern look. A popular kitchen design includes wood cabinets and a natural stone backsplash, accents, or walls. The project in the photo above shows how natural stone can help create a focal point in a kitchen. The design by SK Complete Landscaping features Nutmeg Ridge in the Roughly Squares and Rectangles pattern, with stone supplied by Nasco

2-Natural Materials (in Kitchens)

While natural materials are classic, according to the article, designers believe the current popularity of these products over manmade options adds character and authenticity to their projects. The quality and durability are reliable every time, while every project is uniquely designed and crafted by a mason, which makes these features stand out.

3-Natural Materials (in Bathrooms)

Natural stone evokes a relaxing, peaceful atmosphere, and as you can see in the photo above, it is a great way to add spa vibes to a bathroom. Bathroom design has evolved in recent years to creating at-home retreats, and the trend is still going strong in 2023. 4-Modern Rustic Living rooms

Natural stone fireplaces help create a cozy atmosphere and a welcoming space for relaxing and entertaining guests. Other natural materials including wood accents can also be combined here, as with kitchens, for a classic but more updated look.

5-Connecting to the Outdoors

Natural stone can be used in a number of ways to connect the indoors and outdoors, including patios, which make it more convenient to entertain, prepare and serve food, and enjoy nature with some protection from the elements.

6-Outdoor Lounge

Similar to bathrooms, in recent years, outdoor living projects have maintained their popularity while homeowners enjoy more leisure and recreation time at home. This means an increase in natural stone projects including flagstone patios and walkways, fireplaces and fire pits, pools, and water features. In the photo above, the outdoor living area checks all the boxes for a leisure space, including a fireplace, pool, and large gathering area. Beechwood Landscape incorporated Fieldstone Dark (supplied by GW Lippincott) to create this luxurious space.

7-Sustainability

No matter what is being built, homeowners are more concerned with the sustainable practices surrounding the products they choose. Natural stone is a long-lasting, durable, and low-maintenance material, making it ideal for frequently enjoyed spaces. Whether as a main feature or an accent, it can enhance any size project.
